Forum software upgraded

The forum software has been upgraded to the latest version of Vanilla. Since its inception, the forum has been hopping with activity. I’m happy as ever with Vanilla, and glad to see that the forum has proven to be a valuable resource.

Eventually we’ll consider decomissioning the lyceum-users email list. What do you folks think? If a software project has a good online forum, what mailing lists does it need?

Personally, I don’t like forums, I like mailing lists better. I find it easier to find thing in mailing lists. And easier to search the web and find mailing lists. Forums are too bloated in my opinion.

In contrast to what Matt said, I still absolutely love forums. However, most web forums in their current state are terribly inefficient for their users and unless you have a way setup to let users keep up via email/rss or whatever method is best for them you really have to decide what type of community this is and decide on one or the other. It’s not usually good to have too many information sources for one thing.

What really needs to be completed (and I’ve talked about for years) is a nice fast desktop forum-client with support for interfacing with most major web-forums (likely along with newsgroups and such). I’ve seen scraps implemented here and there but not an actual application that would work for more than one forum since back in the days of Compuserve with TapCIS and NavCIS. *g*

Anyhow, forums support and foster active communities but are a hassle for more occasional users. I’d advise keeping a very limited scope mailing list perhaps.

Totally prefer mail lists. I forgot the forum was even here!

A forum is way better, as long as it is properly structured, moderated and clear FAQs are maintained.
