Help improve the installation instructions

I’ve made a wiki page where folks can help improve the Lyceum installation instructions (found in doc/Installation.txt in the source). Did you have problems installing with a certain version of software, or with a particular shared host? Share what you’ve learned.

http://source.ibiblio.org/trac/lyceum/wiki/InstallationDocumentation

Go at it!

update: the page was deleted for a while, but now it’s back and it’s here to stay.

update: I’ve taken the page offline for now, I’m going to put up a proper wiki for documentation in the near future.

Kind of sad it requires MySQL 4.X, my host still runs 3.X :( I believe MuWordPress runs fine with older versions of MySQL, or am I wrong?

do i do something wrong or the nightly link point to the ZIP archive only ??

I have two domains in the server. The root of one is /www and other one is in the name of the site such like: bbb.com. Now I’m not sure where to put the lyceum src directory. I wanted to start my new site (bbb.com) installed with lyceum. How to do that? I’m quite confused with the pharase ’server root’ in this respect. I’m not an expert so forgive me for such a stupid question.

I meant the document root, which is the location in the filesystem from which apache serves the documents of a given domain name.

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/mod/core.html#documentroot

I had WPMU installed in the bbb.com directory. It was working okay. Now I uninstalled that, and trying to install lyceum. So I moved src in the directory of the web root bbb.com. But so when I type http://www.bbb.com/lyceum/wp-admin/install.php in order to initialize the installation, it says “The requested URL was not found on this server.” I also tried this way: http://www.bbb.com/src/lyceum/wp-admin/install.php. Now it gives fatal error:

Warning: main(): Unable to access /mounted-storage/home7/sub002/sc14208-HYRZ/bangla-blog.com/src/lyceum/../config/wp-config.php in /mounted-storage/home7/sub002/sc14208-HYRZ/bangla-blog.com/src/lyceum/wp-admin/install.php on line 17

What should I do now to install lyceum?

Hi. Make sure you are using Installation.txt that comes with the latest Nightly here:

http://lyceum.ibiblio.org/downloads

Make sure you follow the directions in that first paragraph, including changing PRIVATE_REL_PATH in src/lyceum/private.php.

Let me know how that goes.

Sorry, in the second case I got the fatal error message when I moved the lin and config directory in the lyceum directory. However, if I do not move them, that is, keep the directory structure as it is, I got the meggage “/tmp must be writable by the webserver.” I don’t know what is meant bu “tmp”.

NODNODI- hit me up on IM or in the IRC channel:

http://johnjosephbachir.org/contact_information.html

http://lyceum.ibiblio.org/support

I also tried another way: make a directory “lyc” under the root directory bbb.com, and tried to install by writing http://www.bbb.com/lyc/lyceum/wp-admin/install.php, and I got the same message: “/tmp must be writable by the webserver.”

This page has been deleted from the wiki.

Do you still want more thorough documentation written, because I’d be happy to put something together if you want.

I have exactly the same probleme than “nodnodi” . I installed lyceum-0.32-RC2.tar.gz on apache server.

Someone knows what to do ?

I’m a teachergeek who’s only now learning the webadmin side of things like WPMU and Lyceum - installing them on my VPS, configuring and managing them, etc.

I have an idea that I think could be quite helpful for new Lyceum users (of which I’ll soon be a member): make screencasts walking noobs through the steps of installation, set-up, and maintenance.

For example, my VPS just nuked my entire server - including my WPMU install - instead of just my Moodle install, as I’d requested.

So I now have to reinstall everything on the server, using WebHost Manager and cPanel.

It’s a great window for capturing the process in a screencast - Screencast-o-matic.com is a free web-based tool that does it well - and making that available to any future Lyceum wannabees in my half-clueless shoes.

Check out this example by an Australian walking viewers through setting up Moodle using cPanel, and you’ll see what I mean:

Installing Moodle using cPanel

For this to work, though, it would be great if someone who can do the Lyceum install in their sleep (not me, for sure) to play “Ground Control” (maybe through Skype or Vyew desktop-sharing?) to my “Major Tom.”

Thoughts on this? A screencast really is worth a thousand wiki-words, isn’t it? And we could accumulate a library of them for other situations outside the cPanel / WHM one.

I need to install this pretty quickly for my school - like within the next day or two - so if anyone sees merit in this idea, who can walk me through, I’ll give back with a screencast that should benefit us all with less confusion downstream.

Email me at clayburell[at]gmail[dot]com.

Thanks!

Hi
I have install lyceum on our server.
I have unzipped thatlyceum package(/src,/dev,/ doc etc all) at our server’s filesystem like http://www.blogs.XYZ.com/src
http://www.blogs.XYZ.com/dev …etc.

I have created one blog named ‘ABC’, the blog path seems like http://www.blogs.XYZ.com/src/lyceum/ABC.
But I want that when I will create any blog, default path will be http://www.blogs.XYZ.com/ABC.

Please help me to complete this my stuff. I am doing this first time, so forgive me for such a stupid question…..

WAIT! If you need Lyceum support, use the email list or IRC channel. If you have found a bug, file a ticket or send email to lyceum-bugs AT lists DOT ibiblio DOT org.
